Happy Easter from the MED-TECH family to yours!

Oldest active member of AAMT

There is an article in JAAMT, Jan-Feb, p.42, about the oldest active member of AAMT.

The gentleman's name is Fred Schlichter. He's 80 years old and has been transcribing since 1963, when he started with a medical detachment in a military unit.

A friend of mine met this gentleman and said he is just delightful and a real ball of energy. It seems that Mr. Schlichter got started doing MT while in the military during 1943.

He was assigned to medical detachment and took dictation in shorthand and typed on a manual typewriter. He still can use shorthand.

At the age of 80 he is down to working 20 hours a week, mainly because there are other things he likes to do as well as transcribing. Reading through the interview a little further, it is apparent that he is not afraid of computers, either. He first used a computer in 1987 and has used 5 different ones since then. He works in Birmingham, Alabama.

Happy New Year to everyone, and I do hope the year has started off well for each of you.

We have updated our policy and procedure manual for 2008, and it is available for you to review online at www.med-tech.net/download.html.  The password is "pnp2008."  I encourage each and every one of you to take the time to look this manual over, as it does provide very valuable information regarding your employment with MED-TECH.

Just to point out some of the major changes, I have listed a few things you would all be interested in knowing.

For production employees:

Sick pay will be paid at $9 per hour (up from $8)

Overtime is regular production line pay rate plus $6 per hour after 40 hours (up from $5)

And, as a reminder to production employees, only full-time employees receive holiday pay on the holidays they actually work (part-time employees and ICs do not earn holiday pay, this is a FT benefit)

For ALL employees:

A maximum of 24 paid sick hours may be rolled over each calendar year (up from ZERO previously)

Vacation accrual changes as follows:  After completion of 1st year as well as 2nd year, employees will receive 40 hours, after 3rd year through 5th year, an employee shall be entitled to 80 hours (both the same as before).  Then, for the 6th through 9th year, an employee will receive 80 hours plus an additional 8 hours (1 day) for each year up to 10th year.

For all full-time production employees, vacation pay after the 3rd year through the 5th year will be calculated at 100%, 6th through 9th year will be calculated at 105% and after 10th year will be calculated at 110% (the reward of 105% and 110% has been added).

MTR is in the process of transferring to a new 401K provider and will provide a dollar-for-dollar match up to a maximum of 2% of an employee's salary.  The employer (MTR's) contribution limits are subject to change annually at the discretion of the company and is based on profitability and other factors.  This change to employer contribution is new.

In the next couple of weeks, we will be opening the enrollment for the 401K program for all eligible employees.  Please refer to the policy and procedure manual for eligibility requirements.  Our 401K representatives will be available via web access as well as personally at our office to offer valuable information concerning the benefits of contributing to a 401K program.  I strongly encourage all eligible employees to participate in this program.

If there are any questions regarding the policy and procedure manual or the 401K program, please give me a call.
